what is a strategy to balance the need to conserve and protect the environment at a mine, with the need to mine minerals? :S this may sound stupid >< , but i never learnt about mines before.. so i dont really understand much about them.. so how do the chemicals from the mines leak into streams?

- This varies with the mine. Strip mining has problems different from those of longwall mining. It also varies with the mineral. Coal mines are notorious for the leaking of sulfuric acid into streams. All mined areas can be replanted to some extent, although this may involve importation of organic material to help the plants take hold. The acid can be mitigated somewhat with an artificial wetland.
